Craft Britannia Shop of The Week #58, MeeMeesCreations
Karen of MeeMeesCreations talks to us about this week’s featured CraftBritannia Shop of the Week , a treasure trove of cards, jewellery and crochet accessories!
Describe your “typical” working day or week
At this time of year I tend to concentrate more on jewellery than the crochet side of things. I’m not making as much as I would like right now though as I just had identical twin girls in February, and they keep me very busy indeed, but I still get a little time to make 1 or 2 new items a week.
When you are not doing Etsy related things, what are you doing?
Usually I am busy being a mum to all my lovely children. Hubby works long hours as he is also self employed. Any free time I get I like to see friends and family. I love to read and Robin Hobb and George RR Martin are my favourite authors – my sister and I had already been reading his books before the TV show even started 🙂
What was the first piece you ever sold?
A long silver beaded necklace! Wow was I excited when I sold that, I rang all my family and friends to let them know, haha!
What advice would you give someone taking up your craft for the first time?
With crochet I would just say take your time it’s not as hard as you might think, and also to be aware that they may well become addicted to yarn, I have bags of yarn everywhere! Jewellery making should come with a health warning too, as I am also a beadaholic!
What material do you most enjoy working with?
I love yarn, I love all the different colours and textures you can find, and I love making pretty things to wear from it.
If you could try a new craft, what would it be?
Oh I would love to try sewing, My grandma was great at making pretty dresses for me and my sister Suzi to wear when we were little girls. She also used to make napkins and other items. When my grandma died, my grandad gave me her sewing machine and I have got it out to use many times. But everytime I do I have to put it away again, as it has a little drawer with notes inside that she made for herself; it makes me sad that she isn’t here anymore. One day I will use it, just not yet.
Which piece of equipment would you be helpless without?
My crochet hooks and my jewellery pliers! I wouldn’t be making much without them!
Tell us about what inspires and motivates you
My children inspire me and motivate me too. Sometimes I will be making something and think it’s not that great, but they always tell me how great I am and that they love what I make so I think if they do, someone else will too 🙂
Tell us about one handmade item that you own and love
I have a lot of handmade items, as I buy a lot from other Etsians, but my favourite item is a pair of bronze ceramic heart earrings I bought from Marieanne at DamsonTreePottery. I actually bought them to give as a gift, but they are so gorgeous I had to keep them for myself!
What plans do you have for your shop in the future?
To just keep making pretty things that hopefully people will love.
Thank you Karen! Lovely to meet the maker of your lovely creations.
