Craft Britannia Shop of The Week #32, ColourMeFun
This week’s CraftBritannia Shop of the Week is bright and colourful – selling handmade fun, educational, and original crayons. Meet Danielle of ColourMeFun in this week’s interview.
What was the first piece you ever sold?
The first set of crayons we ever sold was a set of 8 dinosaur crayons – 20 months on and they are still one of our best sellers!
If you could try a new craft, what would it be?
I have always wanted to master knitting. I’ve been an avid crocheter for years (and I actually started my first shop selling crocheted items) but knitting eludes me. I’ve pencilled in taking lessons (either in person or via YouTube) at some point in 2013!
Tell us about what inspires and motivates you
Children and what we loved as a kid. I think, in this instance, it helps to be a big kid stuck in an adults body! We think about what we loved as a kid and go from there. I also think having a child at the perfect colouring age gives great inspiration as well. He will say whether something is “really cool” or not and that’s normally a great indicator.
Tell us about one handmade item that you own and love
My favourite handmade piece that I own was actually made for my husband and myself and is irreplaceable. My mother crocheted us a huge throw for our bed as a wedding gift over 10 years ago.
What plans do you have for your shop in the future?
Right now we are expanding our range of crayons to include a larger variety of themes. We like to take stock from time to time and re-evaluate what’s been the most popular and why. We have also created our own retail packaging which we are slowly introducing into shops and hope to give that a big push in the new year. We are also avidly looking for quirky little gift/children’s shops that would love to carry our crayons.
