Craft Britannia Shop of The Week #30, FruteJuce

Our current CraftBritannia Shop of the Week is FruteJuce, home of bunting, felt, fabric bags and purses, freemotion funky baby onesies, wallets and softies and plushies! Meet Alison, Craftbritannia Leader and the creator of all these goodies.

When you are not doing Etsy related things, what are you doing?

Even though sewing is my mainstay of Etsy, sewing is what I do in my spare time. I sew for myself, as I love to have a new purse on a regular basis and to decorate my own clothing. I nearly always wear black, and a little freemotion sewing on a top gives it a unique look. I am also resizing a baby sling for my daughter as she finds carrying her little one easier than lugging a pushchair around. I am making a skirt for my eldest granddaughter, and bookbags for my grandsons with some very nice digital camo fabric. I also read a lot if I get spare time. I have just finished ‘A Fine Balance’ by Rohinton Mistry, I found it a good read.

What was the first piece you ever sold?

Not including some badges that me and a friend made and sold to school friends when we were eight, it was a silk painted wallhanging at a music festival. It was the usual set up of the time, arrive with a blanket and set up on the grass. I sold everything I had made at that festival and went home and made more.

What material do you most enjoy working with?

Fabric, fabric, fabric! There are so many beautiful fabrics out there, it is a fabric-aholics dream. I love to have a nice fabric teamed with some calico, I use calico at every opportunity as it is so nice to sew with. It is very difficult to put into words, but I love the bright colours with the creamy loveliness of the calico.

If you could try a new craft, what would it be?

I am not sure if it falls under the heading of ‘craft’ but I would love to try shoemaking! I have a wish list of beautiful coloured hides that I would love to work with. I have images of bright pink soft leather shoes but I know that I would default back to black.

Tell us about one handmade item that you own and love

I have an old crochet blanket that was made for me by my mum when I was little – it is my cosy blanket that is on the sofa when I need an extra bit of warmth. My mum can’t believe that I still have the ‘old thing’ and has even made me a new one, but I am afraid I won’t be getting rid of the original just yet 🙂

What plans do you have for your shop in the future?

I have a PDF pattern of my calico bunny in my shop which has sold well. I have had quite a few enquiries to see if I am going to sell patterns of my other items. I enjoyed taking the photographs and putting the pattern together so I think over the coming winter I will make a few more patterns.

Thank you Alison! Lovely to know more about your fabulous work.
