Describe your “typical” working day or week

I wake up and get ready to go to the office, maybe I’ll do some cleaning if it’s desperate, but ideally I’ll have time to pack some orders or catch up online before my lift arrives to go to work. As well as my Etsy shop, I also have a full time job where currently I am designing a range of clothing (Eek!) and I am in charge of other design orientated projects like making brochures, coding websites, selecting buttons and trims etc. Sometimes I manage to sneak some Etsy time in at work.

I also take my dog into the office which is always a riot!

Then home time comes and I spend evenings catching up on housework, then often Boyfriend makes the tea while I do something for my shop like making, packing etc

. My working day pretty much runs from when I wake up to when I go to sleep, but I’m so used to it now I don’t think I’d know what to do with myself if I didn’t have a “to do” list as long as my arm to catch up with!

When you are not doing Etsy related things, what are you doing?

I go to the park with my boyfriend and my dog… and more often than not, my camera!!
I go to lots of gigs, local and otherwise. Last weekend I went on a 200 mile round trip to see a band (it was awesome) and in May I will go for a week’s ‘tour’ round the UK to see my favourite musician :D
. I also watch my TV Shows (Psych, New Girl, Ringer, 90210) and eat takeaways on the sofa in my jammies! I look out of my attic window at the rooftops.
Recently I’ve got into blogs so spend a lot of time reading them, and am also working really hard on my own (

What was the first piece you ever sold?

The first piece I EVER sold was a pair of earrings (pictured above) to a family friend in the US. I was SO excited, and I can even remember laying in bed blinking at the Paypal notification on my iPhone screen. Looking back at my very first product photos I am amazed at how far I have come!

What advice would you give someone taking up your craft for the first time?

Don’t think it’s going to happen overnight!
I think that’s the best advice I can give. When I opened my shop I thought in a couple of months I’d make some extra pocket money to take with me on a trip to New York. How naive!
It’s a long and painful ride, but you just have to work your ass off, take in all the advice you’re given and eventually… eventually…. it will all be worth it and you will feel amazing!! But it’s a long ol’ road and not for the faint hearted.

I am actually going to start a series on my blog VERY soon full of tips and tricks on how to survive in the Etsy world.

What material do you most enjoy working with?

I really love working with fabrics. I have tonnes and tonnes in my cupboard right now and I keep buying them even if I have no design ideas in mind. I love pressing fabrics into buttons for button earrings, and I love the way the button frames the fabric like a tiny work of art. I’m now looking into getting my own fabric designs printed.

If you could try a new craft, what would it be?

I already do so much, I think my Boyfriend would fall over if I decided I wanted to try something new, ha ha!!, although I would like to get back into painting and drawing. I have a huge art easel that I’ve never used, and tonnes of paints – there’s something really therapeutic about pouring whatever is inside of you onto a giant blank canvas.

Which piece of equipment would you be helpless without?

Actually, I think I would be lost without my camera. I use a Nikon D3000 and it was pricey, but certainly the best purchase I ever made. I take it pretty much everywhere with me. It takes fantastic product shots and when I’m feeling uninspired I can wander outside with my camera and see what beauty there is in the world.

Tell us about what inspires and motivates you

Definitely music. If I’m feeling sad, there’s the perfect song to soothe my pain; if I’m feeling bouncy there’s something to bound around to; if I’m feeling emotional there’s always some great lyrics to yell along with (in the comfort of my own home, of course!). There are songs that simply keep me going in my darkest times – I have the lyrics to one of these on the wall in my office and whenever I am ‘this close’ to giving up I see them and something inside me is sparked to carry on.

Other than that, I have a real desire burning inside me to be successful.
I want to provide a wonderful life for my boyfriend so he can concentrate on his dreams too, rather than working his day job. I want to be able to take friends and family out for a good time. I want to be able to support charities that are close to my heart. And I want to be able to stand up one day and say to all the people that never supported or believed in me… “You were wrong!” And I want to be encouragement for other’s out there, that if you work hard enough you can do whatever you want.

Tell us about one handmade item that you own and love

Oh. My. God. I just adore handmade so, so, so much – I really don’t think I can pick just one!
OK… something that immediately springs to mind is my collection of rings from Rebeccas Emporium. They are so unusual and beautiful and fascinating. I can’t tell you the amount of people that reach over and stroke my ring when I wear them out with friends! They’re a great conversation piece and I love wearing things with a story – they always make me feel special when I match one with my outfit. And Rebecca is the sweetest!

What plans do you have for your shop in the future?

I have big, big plans! When I started making jewellery I never thought this is where I would be just over a year later. And honestly, I never thought I’d love doing it as much as I do.
I’m going to be working really hard on my brand in the next few months building up my blog, and possibly doing some advertising. Then the world is my oyster. I want to spend more time making things instead of chasing my tail. I have ideas for so many product lines, some may even spark a new shop! I want to build onetenzeroseven into an empire – a nice one, mind, with good ethics! I’ll never forget where I came from.

Thank you, Sophie for an inspiring interview! We look forward to seeing your creative empire grow.
