Our 1st CraftBritannia Shop of the Week is…. DayzeeLoveDesigns!
Welcome to the launch of our brand new CraftBritannia Shop of the Week feature! To kick off our first week we have chosen to say a big “Thank You” to our hardworking Team Captain – Dayz from DayzeeLoveDesigns. Dayz specialises in Graphic Design, Packaging and Promotions, and also runs two other Etsy shops: DayzeeeLove for intricate nature inspired jewellery creations, and CheekyGeeky for the ultimate in geek chic.
Describe your “typical” working day or week
I am a Games Tester for my day job so have to commute 40 miles each way every week day. I specialise in Compliance and work on either Nintendo or Xbox 360 products. The first thing I do when I wake up is boot up my laptop while I make a cuppa tea. I check all of my 3 shops in a different browser and say hi to the early birds on the team Chat & Promote thread. I leave quite early and arrive at work around 8am, when I will get another cuppa and some breakfast. While eating I say hi to the rest of the early risers on the team thread.
I am usually quite busy with the current project so won’t get much time online until lunchtime but can check for convos and emails on my iPhone. I like to work on Etsy projects at lunch and take photos as the light can be great out in the Warwickshire countryside at this time of day. This is followed by an afternoon of testing and then the long drive home.
When I get back I have had lots of time to think up new ideas and I can’t wait to try them out. I will edit my photos and get my new listings up and work on orders. Then I will have some time to chat in the main thread or in one of the weekday BNS treasuries. I get hooked into Etsy for the rest of the evening and often find it hard to put down so getting anything else done can be quite difficult.
I leave most of my house work to the weekend and tell myself that if I do some of my jobs I can then do a bit of Etsy work and some chatting with the team. I try and alternate between them so I get as much done as I can. I also like to try and fit in some relaxation time with my boyfriend. Before you know it it’s Monday and it all starts again!
When you are not doing Etsy related things, what are you doing?
I like to relax and watch films with my boyfriend. We are into ghost films and crime drama and love nothing more than to catch up with our favourites with a few bags of popcorn. I will often have my laptop open doing Etsy work and he will be on his iPad working on his own projects or playing games.
What was the first piece you ever sold?
My first sale came from helping out in the Critique forum. It was during my Christmas holidays, I had flu and couldn’t sleep so was replying to a request for advice and the sellers wife spotted my leaf skeleton magnets and she loved them. I had been on Etsy for a month and it was the most exciting feeling and I was buzzing for weeks. It definitely perked me up and helped me get over my flu too!
What advice would you give someone taking up your craft for the first time?
My advice for anyone getting into crafting would be experiment and have fun learning some different techniques. If it was graphic design I would suggest learning all the terms, but try and have a unique way of working that will help them to stand out from other designers. All too often you see people trying to fit a preconceived mold and this just means there are more of the same in an already saturated market.
What material do you most enjoy working with?
I really like Photoshop, but found that if you combine designs with glass you can give them an extra dimension. You can take anything pretty and make it shine by putting it under some glass. I am like a magpie and am drawn to shiny things so have a lot of coloured glass on my desk to inspire me. The surface of my desk is made of glass with a shelf below so I have more shiny things under there too.
If you could try a new craft, what would it be?
I am about to take a course in millinery. When I left school it was something I was interested in but there weren’t any relevant courses available. I am hoping I can rekindle that interest again and combine it with the other skills I have developed since I have been on Etsy.
Which piece of equipment would you be helpless without?
My laptop is my lifeline, I am lost when it doesn’t work and go into a slight panic mode. I have an iPhone now too so when I’m at work I get all my emails and can chat on the team forum threads on my phone when I’m out and about. There is still so much more that I need my laptop for though.
Tell us about what inspires and motivates you
I love to create things so when people love them enough to buy them it makes for very exciting times. I especially like being able to re-use materials. A lot of the items in my first shop, DayzeeLove were made from experimenting with including recycled materials. My second shop was developed from requests from my customers. This meant being able to reuse my graphic design skills once again. I used to design advertising as my day job but gave it up and went into Games Testing when the recession hit the print industry. So being able to reuse these skills is very inspiring.
Tell us about one handmade item that you own and love
I use this purse everyday – it’s perfect for what I need, it’s pretty, functional and I’ve had a few compliments on it too!
What plans do you have for your shop in the future?
I have plans to rebrand all 3 shops and link them together as different concessions within my own website. I have a number of new lines I am working on for each shop but haven’t finalised all the designs yet. As part of an on-going improvement I’m going to replace a lot of my current photos on the frequently selling items.
Thank you Dayz for giving us a peek into your world!
